With a German father and Estonian mother, Hans was born in Poland. He was raised in Germany until the age of 10, then educated in England and naturalized British.
Han’s first career was in Hotel and Catering Management. His seven years of training involved time spent in Switzerland, Denmark and Sweden. In 1967, prior to accepting his first management position, Hans flew as an airline steward for two years out of Heathrow Airport in London.
In 1976, he and his wife, Gloria, moved to America. It was Sheraton Hotels who brought Hans to the US for the position of Food and Beverage Director at the Sheraton Palace Hotel in San Francisco. Subsequently Hans was Assistant Manager at the Lodge at Pebble Beach and then Food and Beverage Director at the Grand Canyon National Park.
In 1981, back in California, Hans started his own chimney and venting business which he ran for 25 years. It involved working closely with the County Board of Realtors and that in turn involved him in community activities. In 2000, he was recognized as Affiliate of the Year in recognition of outstanding service and contribution to the Real Estate Profession. In 2003, the Merced County Board of Realtors presented Hans with the Lifetime Achievement Award for service to the Association and the community. Then in 2004, he was presented with the Jesse Fees award for Professionalism, Service and Congeniality.
Hans was the first non-citizen in California toserve on a city planning commission. This was in Atwater, in Merced County. He served as vice chairman.In January of 2002, Hans was recognized by the localFirefighters Association in appreciation of his commitment and dedication in raising over $3,000 for the New York City Fire Department Widows & Orphans Fund following 9/11.
In 2006, Hans and Gloria moved to Elizabethtown. A couple of years later Hans had both his knees replaced at Hardin Memorial Health. This exposed him to the HMH Auxiliary which he later joined in order to help the physiotherapist in the Total Limbs Department. He now volunteers in the Gift Shop and the Front Desk as well as running the volunteer’s website.
